Joan Smalls began her fashion career in 2007 through a contract with Elite Model Management in New York.
Throughout her career, the model has worked as a spokesperson for Dillard’s, Givenchy and Givenchy eyewear (photographed by Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott), Gucci, Liz Claiborne, Neiman Marcus, Ports 1961 and Ralph Lauren.
She has also appeared on the covers of the UK editions of i-D, Bond and WWD Beauty Biz.
In 2020 she was among the stars of Max Mara’s spring/summer campaign, shot by Steven Meisel, and in March she was on the cover of Vogue Japan.
